Lobster Village
small text
large text
New Harbor, Maine — Lobstermen begin their day. They look out and see a peaceful ocean surface with excellent visibility. Traps have been out "soaking" for three to four days, all around Pemaquid Point and the westward reach of Muscongus Bay. Today is a perfect day to collect them. But first, the lobstermen must organize themselves and their boats in the harbor. In pairs and alone, each row a skiff out to their moored lobster boat, start up the engine, suit up in oilskins, and load up with fresh bait and new traps. Piers are built into the rock walls of this harbor refuge, often times tucked right in front of the lobsterman's house. Colorful vessels sway from moorings in unison with the light breeze. Lobster fishing has proven sustainable, the result of good management and sound fishing practice.
